Ghostbusters Old & New

With the new Ghostbusters film literally just around the corner and with the original Ghostbusters film being one of my favourite films of all time I just thought I’d sum up the films in my own words along with my thoughts on the new film.

The originals and the best. Egon Spengler, Ray Stantz, Peter Venkman and Winston Zeddemore.

I first saw the original Ghostbusters way back in 1984, it fascinated me and literally started me down the sci-fi path.  Ghostbusters is the story of three scientists who, after getting kicked out of University, set up business as paranormal investigators and eliminators.  Using excessivley cool tech such as the Proton Pack and Ghost Trap they seek out ghosts terrorising the citizens of New York and ultimately save the world from the double team of Zuul and Gozer.

One of the main reasons this film is special is the characters.  Firstly we have Egon Spengler the brains of the Ghostbusters. Ray Stantz is undoubtly the heart of the Ghostbusters, he’s always full of optimism and enthusiasm for the job. Next up is Peter Venkman the mouth of Ghostbusters, always ready with a witty line . Finally there’s Winston Zeddemore, who was hired after the Ghostbusters business took off and helped save the world after only a couple of weeks on the job.

The newbies. Erin Gilbert, Jillian Holtzmann, Abby Yates and Patty Tolan.

The new Ghostbusters film starring Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones is out next week and has stirred up all kinds of controversy.  There have been ridiculous claims that the new film has ruined childhoods or destroyed the original films, this is of course not possible without the use time travel. Beyond this there has been something of a campaign of hate aimed at the film, I won’t be going in to this as I do not buy into it.

Personally I think the film looks like a lot of fun.  Sure some of the early trailers were poorly put together and the jokes fell a little flat but beyond that it seems that we’re in for lots of ghost busting fun.  The new tech looks amazing, and are sure to be put to good use during the course of the film.

Will the film actually be any good, only time will tell.  The later trailers have been much improved which bodes well, however I do not for second think that this will be anywhere near as good as the original films.

I will be sitting in the cinema when the film is out and will let you know my thoughts once I’ve seen it.

Ghostbusters will be released in the UK on the 11th of July.
