I’m a huge fan of Doctor Who, ever since it came back on our screens I’ve been hooked and loved every minute (except Love and Monsters). For around 54 years the role of the Doctor has always gone to a male actor, each and everyone one of these were brilliant in their own right and I wouldn’t change any of them for anything. However the other week this happened……
The 13th Doctor (technically the 14th but lets not go there) is to be played by Jodie Whittaker. This of course has caused the Doctor Who fandom to explode a bit. Some like myself are excited for the change and think it’ll give the series a much needed kick up the bum. Others are worried that people might not accept this change and will switch off. The rest just think that an alien who can change appearance cannot be a woman, because that’s how it works apparently.
Doctor Who is a show about change, over the course of the 54 years it has not just been the Doctor who has changed. There has been a string of wonderful companions, the Tardis interior has changed dramatically since the show started and even the Sonic Screwdriver has had several different variations. You’re taught to accept change and just run with it. So I don’t understand why people cannot accept the direction the show is taking. Jodie Whittaker is a brilliant actress and no doubt had to fight for the role, it’s no doubt highly sought after and requires you to be passionate about it. She no doubt knows what she has taken on and will give it her all.
In the end all we can do is wait for series 11 in 2018 to see how she gets on, however we will get a glimpse of her during this years Christmas special when 12th Doctor Peter Capaldi regenerates.
Logan surprised me by how good it actually was. The story revolves around the Ex X-Men Wolverine, or Logan for short, protecting a young girl who has powers similar to his own. This film isn’t afraid to pile on the bloody violence in between all the quiet moments. One of the best comic book movies ever.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
GOTG 2 somehow actually surpasses the original film. Once again we follow the Guardians once again saving the galaxy from a massive threat and doing it with the usual awesome soundtrack. In this one Peter Quill (Star Lord) meets his father, who turns out to be a living planet called Ego, and wackiness and other amazing set pieces ensue. GOTG 2 once again makes you absolutely adore Groot and will break your heart more than once in the space of 10 minutes. So far that’s 2 absolutely stellar comic book movies.
Wonder Woman is a surprise hit, Gal Gadot plays both sides of the role pretty much perfectly. She is both as tough as any other superhero but innocent went it comes to the world outside of Themyscira. The action sequence in the trenches is amazing but the final battle at the end of the film is a let down in comparison. However this is yet another amazing comic book movie this year. That makes 3, surely that must be all.
After his short stint in Captain America Civil War, Spider-man is back in the brilliantly fun movie. Under the watchful eye of Tony Stark, Peter Parker sets out protecting the citizens of New York from the evil Vulture. This film is technically not an origin story because lets face it we all know how he became Spider-man by now. However it also technically is since he’s still new to the role and learns how to be responsible in the role. Tom Holland is brilliant as Peter Parker/Spider-man and Marvel did an excellent job finding him. Four high quality comic book movies and with Thor Ragnarok look awesome from the trailers and Justice League may surprise us yet.
Alien Covenant is a sequel to the slightly better than mediocre Prometheus. It continues the story of David the Android from Prometheus as he meets the crew of the Covenant. This film is much better than Prometheus mainly because this time we get to see the Xenomorph make a lovely bloody mess. Hopefully the next film will improve things further.
Persona 5 is one if the most stylish JRPGs around. It looks amazing and has an awesome soundtrack. There’s loads of game mechanics to learn and enjoy and a whole load of interesting characters to get to know. Building relationships between your character and his friends is an important part of the game as it can open up new skills during the palace crawling areas (same thing as dungeon crawling but they’re called palaces}. If I had one gripe it’s that the talky cut scenes can go on and on and on and on etc. However it’s a very enjoyable way to spend 90+ hours.
Zelda Breath of the Wild
A new Zelda game is always a big thing for Nintendo fans and this one is no different. Set in a massive open world you once again take on the role of Link, the hero who has saved Hyrule many times before. This time he wakes from a very long nap with no little to no direction and is thrown into a beautiful world. The game revolves around exploring the landscape completing shrines to upgrade your health and stamina, and of course going after the evil Ganon. The first big exclusive on the Nintendo Switch is indeed amazing but in my opinion it is not the awesome game that some thin it is.
Set aboard a space station orbiting Earths Moon, experiments on an alien life form inevitably go wrong. Prey is sort of metroidvania meets System Shock, you have go back and forth between different areas of the station unlocking new areas and completing quests. All this while fending off the evil Typhon, some of which can mimic objects in the world. This game is pretty awesome, it has an interesting story and some cool game mechanics that kept me hooked till the end.
Mass Effect Andromeda
The fourth game in the Mass Effect series is more of a spin-off from the main story. Set somewhere between Mass Effect 2 and 3 it sees Arks full of humans, Turians, Krogan etc sent out to the Andromeda galaxy to find new homes, naturally things go wrong. A new alien race called the Kett start causing trouble and it is up to the Human pathfinder and his or her team to stop them and at the same time scouting out potential base locations on other planets. I found ME:A a little disappointing at first, it unfortunately didn’t live up to the original trilogy. However once I got a good few hours in to the game it really grabbed me and I started enjoying the setting and the new characters and missions.
Greetings and apologies to all. It has been a long 5 months since I last posted on this blog. Think it was a post about the awesome Resident Evil 7. Since then I’ve played lots of games, watched a bunch of movies and TV, and been to work a bunch.
Work has been a hard slog this past year, starting at 5am in the morning and being on my feet for 8 hours is very tiring. This along with not having a proper weekend so little time to recover means I’m tired pretty much all the time. So my get up and go as pretty much got up and gone. It’s been getting me down and it’s definitely time for me to find another job, whatever that may be.
As for this blog I want to get posting again, all those games and films along with the fact that the 13th Doctor is a woman means I’ve got plenty to be getting on with. I’ll probably do a round-up of the games and movies, although there are a couple of things that in my opinion need their own post.
I’ll hopefully get a new post up in the next day or two.
