Good Movies I’ve Seen in 2017 (so far)

Logan

Logan surprised me by how good it actually was.  The story revolves around the Ex X-Men Wolverine, or Logan for short, protecting a young girl who has powers similar to his own.  This film isn’t afraid to pile on the bloody violence in between all the quiet moments.  One of the best comic book movies ever.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

GOTG 2 somehow actually surpasses the original film.  Once again we follow the Guardians once again saving the galaxy from a massive threat and doing it with the usual awesome soundtrack.  In this one Peter Quill (Star Lord) meets his father, who turns out to be a living planet called Ego, and wackiness and other amazing set pieces ensue.  GOTG 2 once again makes you absolutely adore Groot and will break your heart more than once in the space of 10 minutes.  So far that’s 2 absolutely stellar comic book movies.

Wonder Woman

Wonder Woman is a surprise hit, Gal Gadot plays both sides of the role pretty much perfectly.  She is both as tough as any other superhero but innocent went it comes to the world outside of Themyscira.  The action sequence in the trenches is amazing but the final battle at the end of the film is a let down in comparison.  However this is yet another amazing comic book movie this year.  That makes 3, surely that must be all.

Spider-man Homecoming

After his short stint in Captain America Civil War, Spider-man is back in the brilliantly fun movie. Under the watchful eye of Tony Stark, Peter Parker sets out protecting the citizens of New York from the evil Vulture.  This film is technically not an origin story because lets face it we all know how he became Spider-man by now.  However it also technically is since he’s still new to the role and learns how to be responsible in the role.  Tom Holland is brilliant as Peter Parker/Spider-man and Marvel did an excellent job finding him.  Four high quality comic book movies and with Thor Ragnarok look awesome from the trailers and Justice League may surprise us yet.

Alien Covenant

Alien Covenant is a sequel to the slightly better than mediocre Prometheus.  It continues the story of David the Android from Prometheus as he meets the crew of the Covenant.  This film is much better than Prometheus mainly because this time we get to see the Xenomorph make a lovely bloody mess.  Hopefully the next film will improve things further.

Resident Evil 7

The 7th main iteration of the Resident Evil series is finally here and it’s a terrifying corker.

You play as Ethan who is searching for his wife who supposedly died 3 years ago. His search takes him to the home of the Baker family which is where the fun begins.

Resi 7 is played entirely in the first person, meaning all the scares are in your face. This is used to terrifying effect during the game since the Bakers like to get up close.

During the game you face each member of the Baker family one at a time. Each attack you in there own unique way. Jack, for example, is a walking tank who relentlessly chases you down. I’ll leave the others as a surprise.

One of the main concerns before the game was released was people were worried that it would be missing all the things that make a Resident Evil game. Rest assured however that they are pretty much all here. We have herbs, strange doors, weird puzzles, evil experiments, item boxes and very little ammo.

Resident Evil 7 is a brilliant return to form for the series. I’ve already finished the game 6 times and I’m still not bored. Sure the last third or so doesn’t live up to the first two thirds but this is a game that shouldn’t  be missed.

Until Dawn – Horror Games

Until Dawn is one of the best horror games of recent years. Released in 2015 to plenty of praise and became something of a sleeper hit.

Until Dawn is the story of a bunch of teenage friends returning to the lodge were 2 of their friends were killed. The game takes place over the course of one night with the kids fighting for their lives.

Gameplay is similar to Heavy Rain with plenty of quick time events. However these QTEs never drag the game down and actually manage to enhance the experience.

One of the best things about the game is that any of the kids can die and the story just carries on without them. This allows for a multitude of endings and plenty of tension if you’re trying to keep everyone alive.

I personally finished the game several times upon release and have decided to go back to it since halloween is just around the corner.

Until Dawn is an awesome game with plenty of scares and well worth a play.

If you have any suggestions for which horror game I should play next let me know in the comments.
